The word ‘Sulekha’ means (in Bengali as well as many other Sanskrit based languages) “good writing”. Sulekha Works Limited, an endeavour initiated in 1934 by two freedom fighters Sankaracharyya Maitra and Nani Gopal Maitra, is the pioneer in manufacturing of writing inks, allied writing instruments and homecare products in India.
This enterprise was initiated in undivided Bengal of pre-independent India and was considered to be a symbol of Swadeshi movement and self reliance. As Gandhiji once said, Sulekha ink was a symbolic defiance to the rule of the Raj.
Sulekha now manufactures a variety of items. The core sector being Office & School Stationeries including different types writing inks, specialized printing and marking inks (permanent & washable type), adhesives, industrial products etc. The homecare range mainly consists of products associated with health and hygiene.
Sulekha helped several governments from different countries of South Asia and Africa set up their own writing ink and writing instrument-manufacturing units.
In 2010, Sulekha launched a range of Solar powered products with an aim to bring light in the homes of millions who are yet to get the benefits of conventional power supply.
